  1. The Forum

    There is an appealing range of upmarket shops housed across six floors. Forum is a centre of fashion and there are many beautiful clothes, accessories, and shoes to choose from.   2. New Market

    It is a good place to sample Indian sweet delicacies and generally soak up the atmosphere of Kolkata. There are also a few handicraft stalls inside. The market is in a large red brick building on Lindsay Street (the road parallel with Sudder Street to the north). It has got over 2,000 stalls and is a bargain hunter's delight. The shops are arranged merchandise-wise. It is supposed to be the ultimate marketing experience in Kolkata.

  3. Burrabazar

    Kolkata's wholesale market is spread across Burrabazar and Posta. The place was the old Sutanuti Hat before the British came. With the influx of the Marwaris (a trading class) during British rule from North India, it was transformed in to Burrabazar (big market). The saying goes that if one is willing to pay the price, eveything is available in Burrabazar. The market thrives on selling larger quantities at cheaper prices.

  4. Park Street

    Famous for its eateries - Kolkata's ultimate food destination, but also showcases fashionable clothes, books from all over the world. and so on. Park Street has retained the British spirit - it is so well decorated during Christmas, as if it is still part of the British Empire. The overwhelmingly non-Christian crowd gather there to enjoy Christmas. One has to queue up at any restaurant.

  5. Gariahat

    Gariahat which comes under Ballygunge area is the biggest shopping district of Kolkata, where one can find shops ranging from branded showrooms and malls to numerous smaller shops. It has a good market for saris and other clothing items. The shops are spread along both Rashbehari Avenue and Gariahat Road, and extends into the lanes.

  6. Vardaan Market

    Forerunner of today's large shoppng malls, it was the earliest airconditioned market. Little shops and stalls line the walls of this mall selling shoes, handbags, toys, saris, salwar suits and western wear for ladies, shirts, tee shirts and trousers for men and children's clothes for all ages, chocolates and snacks.

    The Westside stores have numerous departments to meet the varied shopping needs of customers. These include menswear, women’s wear, kid’s wear, footwear, cosmetics, perfumes and handbags, household accessories, lingerie, and gifts. Fashionable goods priced a little on the higher side.

  8. Mullick Ghat

    At the base of the Howrah bridge, on the Kolkata side, is the city’s bustling wholesale flower market. Flowers are an essential part of life in the city, they are bought not just for temple prayers but also for wedding decorations, events and festivals.

  9. Dakhsinapan Shopping Complex

    It is an excellent place to buy Indian handicrafts and artifacts. There are many Indian state government emporiums there, stocked with fixed price goods from all over the country. It also has clothes shops, eateries et al.

  10. Chowringhee

    It is the central market place for the people of Kolkata. There shops ranging from computer peripherals to paint brushes and accessories, from cloth merchants to ''phoren'' goods. There are movie theaters and eateries.

    A wonderful independent bookstore tucked away in an alley leading from Middleton Street. As the name suggests, the bookstore specializes in environmental titles, but also has a wide range on local subjects and poetry.

    It has several stores selling handicrafts. The largest is at the corner of Surendra Nath Banerjee Road. Those who are particular about handicrafts can also try 'Dakhinapan Shopping Complex' (see South Kolkata),

    A large and well organized bookstore. Great selection of books on India and by Indian writers. Check out the discount books and cafe (Cha Bar - see Drink section) on the second floor.

    It is famous for its second hand bookshops and second hand record stalls. One can rummage through the LPs for sale on the street and one will find some real gems from the jazz age.
