I used Nomax to find a group to head to the Wagah Border ceremony. It was so much more fun cheering with new friends than going alone!

Golden Temple Complex
This is the main attraction in the city, and the most important religious place to the Sikhs. It's a stunning complex, and always full of thousands of pilgrims from all over India, excited to be at a place that they usually only see on television. The excitement to be here is infectious, and many people will be more than happy to tell you all about their religion and customs, and show you around the temple itself, just wander around one of the most amazing places in India! - As you arrive near the complex, you will more likely than not be accosted by hawkers trying to sell you bandannas to cover your head. It's not a bad souvenir for ₹10, but there's also a big barrel of free ones to choose from at the entrance itself.
Akal Takht
This is where the highest council of Sikhs sits and deliberates. At night, the Guru Granth Sahib is taken to the Akal Takht.
Amrit Sarovar
The giant pool of water that surrounds and reflects the Golden Temple. Sections (marked off by ropes) are set aside for (male) pilgrims wishing to bathe.
Central Sikh Museum
Devoted to large gallery of paintings, mostly showing the gruesome ways countless Sikhs have been martyred, and various items from the gurus.
Harmandir Sahib
This is the Golden Temple itself, floating above the Amrit Sarovar, housing the sacred Adi Granth scripture which is recited out loud during the day. This is the most crowded point, accessible by a bridge from the edge of the pool, and entry here is regulated by traditionally dressed Sikh guards. It's a 2 story structure where Sikh saints are seated on each floor.
Kaulsar Sarovar
This is one of five sarovars in the City. This sarovar is in honor of Mata Kaulan, a Muslim woman, who was taken into care by the sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind on instructions of Mian Mir, a close friend of the Sikh Gurus and a pious and wise Muslim pir. - All Sikhs are encouraged in their lives to do volunteer services at any gurdwara or in the greater society, and everyone you see working here is fulfilling that duty. It's likely possible that you can join in if you feel so inclined - you could enquire by asking the people outside peeling vegetables, or those washing dishes.

Langar Ghar
Free Communal kitchen, where people of any colour, caste, creed or religion, can eat food (langer) sitting together

Meeting up for a 'Kulcha crawl' through the Old City was the highlight of my trip. We found a hidden dhaba thanks to a local tip in the Nomax chat.
The Golden Temple is magical, but sharing the experience of volunteering in the kitchen with two other travelers I met on Nomax made it unforgettable.

Where can I meet other solo travelers in Amritsar?
The best place to meet travelers is around the Golden Temple complex and the pedestrian-only Heritage Street. You can also find social vibes at popular backpacker hubs like the Madpackers Hostel or while volunteering at the Guru-ka-Langar community kitchen.
Is Amritsar safe for solo travelers?
Amritsar is generally very safe for solo travelers, including women, due to the city's welcoming hospitality and the 24/7 activity around the Golden Temple. However, it is wise to use registered e-rickshaws when navigating the Old City at night and to stay in well-lit, populated areas like Ranjit Avenue.
How can Nomax help me find travel companions in Amritsar?
Nomax allows you to browse profiles of other travelers visiting Amritsar at the same time and join specific activity groups. You can coordinate a group taxi to the Wagah Border, which is about 30km away, saving costs and making the experience more social.
Do I need to speak the local language to get around Amritsar?
While Punjabi and Hindi are the primary languages, English is widely understood in the tourism sector, hotels, and restaurants. Using Nomax to connect with English-speaking travel buddies can also help you navigate more complex interactions in the local markets.
What local food should I try in Amritsar?
Don't miss the Amritsari Kulcha at Maqbool Road, the rich Dal Makhani at Kesar Da Dhaba, and a giant glass of lassi from Ahuja Milk Bhandar. Sharing these heavy, delicious meals with a Nomax companion is the best way to try a variety of dishes without over-ordering.
What are the most Instagrammable spots in Amritsar?
The Golden Temple at night is breathtaking, but for unique shots, head to the colorful Sadda Pind cultural village or the intricately carved Durgiana Temple. The Partition Museum's red-brick architecture also provides a striking backdrop for meaningful photography.
What are the best neighborhoods to stay in Amritsar?
For proximity to the main sites, stay in the 'Old City' near the Golden Temple. If you prefer a more modern atmosphere with upscale cafes and shopping, Ranjit Avenue or the Mall Road area are excellent choices for international travelers.
What are the best hostels and social accommodation in Amritsar?
Madpackers Amritsar and Pillow Dorm are highly rated for their social rooftops and common areas. Staying in these spots in combination with using Nomax ensures you are never far from a group of like-minded explorers.
